The History of the Cemetery

The Wappingers Rural Cemetery was founded in 1849 and is located on the east side of Route 9D, adjacent to the Village of Wappingers Falls line on the north end.  A main entrance, gravel walks, and roads were constructed throughout the cemetery for easy access to burial plots.  Since it's founding, the cemetery has been under the direction and care of an exceptional collection of honorable trustees and superintendents.

In 1924, a small chapel of stone masonry construction was built just inside of the main entrance.  In 2020, the board of trustees completed a total restoration of the chapel.  With the stunning revival of the main entrance and inside, the chapel is a desired location for services of all denominations.

In 1971, Dutchess County approved the purchase of a 50-grave plot for the burial of our local service men and women.  Since the initial purchase, the county continues to renew these options.  Our veterans plot continues to be a popular and respectful place for those who gave their lives for our country.

Our superintendents and board of trustees continue to constantly make improvements to the grounds.  The planting of flowers, shrubs, and trees, as well as the pristine maintenance of the grounds makes the Wappingers Falls Rural Cemetery the perfect destination for anyone's final resting place.
